We need to be thankful for our Christian upbringing! As second-generation Christians, we have been handed the Bible and spiritual nutrition all our lives. We have been taught since we were babies (most of us) that Christ has died for our sins and risen the third day. We've been taught how to behave, what to say, and we know all the "right answers." We often know more than some adults do about the Bible due to this upbringing! We know the Books of the Bible in order, we know Psalm 23 by heart, we know Romans 8:28, we learn verses and facts about the Bible all the time. But we aren't thankful for it. Why? Why do act like it's "nothing," or even become ashamed of it sometimes? Why do we try to pass it off as something that's our parents' "thing?" Why don't we own it? I think it's something we take for granted. We haven't seen the awesomeness of it as a gift from God. And sometimes, we don't want to. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? We don't want to see a gift from God as a gift? We'd much rather say that it's because we were just "born into it?" Yet, even as saved Christians, we don't see the entirety of it. It's an amazing gift to know as much as we do. We know how to lead others to Christ when some adults that are saved don't even know how! We are so comfortable with the Gospel that we flippantly talk about it. But the Gospel is a love story. Not the typical kind that you find in a bookstore or watch on TV with two people falling in love. It's so much better. We see God for Who He is. And to us, as second generation Christians, that amazing knowledge is old. We hear it almost every day. So how do we make the Bible and the Gospel special again? Well, I find that words to old hymns about the Bible, God, and the Gospel help -- but you have to think about the words while you sing them. You can also study the Bible (not just read it... Meditate on it. Think about. Derive the meaning of that particular chapter/verse/phrase and think about what that means in your own personal life.) And pray about it! You can pray Scripture! Talk with God about what you're reading. Oh! I forgot to mention fellowship! You don't have to have food to fellowship (but it certainly doesn't hurt!) You talk with someone else about how God's been working in your life. All these things help us to realize how special our upbringing is. What are you specifically thankful about growing up in a Christian home/church today?
